EDUCATION
The South Iowa Juvenile Detention School is operated by Great Prairie Area Education Agency. The school is currently manned by one certified special education teacher along with one teacher associate. The school is in session for 192 days with an additional 20 to 30 days of summer school. A typical school day is from 8:30AM to 2:30PM.
The Detention School operates cooperatively with students home schools in an effort to keep kids caught up on their studies while at detention. Typically the school day is divided into five class periods covering language arts, math, science, social studies, and life skills. Textbooks and homework assignments are often obtained from the home schools of individual students. However, if this is not possible the detention school does have six computers that contain the Plato Learning System software. The school is also equipped with a library of textbooks to try to match the student as close as possible to that of the home school.
Once the student is moved to placement or returns to their regular school, a progress report detailing what the student has completed is sent to the student’s home school and placement if necessary.
